The Matrimandir will be the soul of Auroville. A place... for trying to find one’s consciousness
Matrimandir and the Peace Area
At the centre of the city is the oval Peace Area where the Matrimandir, the soul of Auroville, is located. Matrimandir is surrounded by 12 petals and 12 gardens. Right next to it is a giant banyan tree which is the geographical centre of Auroville. Nearby is the amphitheatre with the Urn of Human Unity that contains the soil of 121 nations and 23 Indian states. All of these are surrounded by a lake in the making, creating an atmosphere of calm and serenity and serving water to the city in the future.

City AreaThe City the Earth NeedsIn accordance with The Mother’s plan, the City Area is composed of four zones surrounding the Matrimandir Peace Area & the City Centre. They are the Residential, Cultural, International, and Industrial zones. The Auroville Development Plan envisages massive investment spread over the different zones to enable Auroville to reach its full potential progressively and rapidly. This will also help Auroville extend the benefits of its development to the surrounding villages and bioregion.
The GreenbeltA multi-purpose asset for Auroville and the surrounding villagesThe Green Belt Zone has broadly three main categories of uses, viz. agriculture and farming, forest and land regeneration and recreation. Their development is designed to promote biodiversity enhancement, environmental management, land regeneration and water management, with technology transfer of the above activities for wider application. This will make the Green Belt not only an asset for Auroville and the surrounding villages, but also a National Resource Centre (NRC) for sustainable development.
