Roger Anger

Chief Architect of Matrimandir

It was with shock and deep sadness that the community was informed of the passing of its Chief Architect, Roger Anger, early morning of January 15th in France. Roger would have been 85 in March, 2008.

About

Roger Anger was a French architect who worked on the Auroville project, designed by Mirra Alfassa, known as The Mother, and endorsed by UNESCO and the Government of India.

Born in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, Roger Anger was the youngest of three sons of lawyer Henri Anger. Originally, Roger Anger wanted to be a surgeon. Because of the war, he apprenticed in Antibes in the studio of the artist Capello. Impressed by his drawings, Capello encouraged him to study architecture. While preparing for his degree, Roger Anger gained his first experience of architecture, spending two years in Paul-Jacques Grillo's studio. Roger Anger completed his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, graduating in 1947.

In the early dawn of Wednesday January 16th, hundreds of Auroville residents gathered around Matrimandir’s Banyan Tree for a silent gathering, commemorating the passing of the man who had been the driving force for Mother’s City, and so persevering in his adherence to her Call.

Dear Roger, we salute you and hold you in our prayers with all our gratitude and respect, - and our heartfelt love and strength go out to Jacqueline in this hour of transition.
