Georges van Vrekhem
On Friday, August 31st, our good friend and brother Georges van Vrekhem quietly left his body in his sleep in his house at Shakti near Aspiration community. He was 77 years old and had been a heart patient since 15 years.
Hailing from Belgium, Georges came to India in the very early seventies, stayed his first years in the Ashram and moved to Auroville in 1978. Through his studies, research and deep understanding of the teachings and vision of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, he touched many a person worldwide, opening eyes to their remarkable path and call. His many articles and books are widely read in Europe and USA where he regularly gave talks throughout the years, while also in Auroville he shared his insights through talks with the community. The urge to express his understanding in writing was strong and we are grateful for it.
Georges had a deep and intimate understanding of the way Auroville works, and was always able to place the community’s growth-pangs, challenges and oftentimes difficult hurdles-on-the-way in the context of our founders’ vision, thereby maintaining an upbeat, inspiring presence throughout the years. We will dearly miss him.
Georges’ body was taken to the Health Centre where friends could come and bid him a last farewell, after which it was buried at Adventure’s funeral grounds in the afternoon of Monday, September 3rd, with Carel paying a warm tribute and many friends attending.
Our love and sympathy go out to his partner Sudha and his young adopted son, Akash Biradar from Karnataka, as well as to all his friends and readers in Auroville and worldwide.
