Claude Charpie
This is to inform the community that in the early morning of Saturday, July 25th 2009, Aurovilian Claude Charpie left his body after a long and brave struggle with cancer, at the age of 72. Claude's wife and sisters were with him, and our sympathy and strength goes out to them, as well as to his children in Europe.
Claude, who has Swiss nationality, was born in Uturoa, Raiatea (French Polynesia), and he lived there, and in Tahiti, until he was 14 when the family moved back to Switzerland. Claude’s Tahitian name is Rainuiatea, meaning ‘Vast Starry Sky’.
He joined Auroville in 1993. After several years of stewarding Meadow, he moved to Repos and has been steadily working with the lighting team during cultural activities in Sri Aurobindo's Auditorium and other venues.
Claude's body remained for three days in the AV Health Centre for a last farewell, after which it was cremated at Adventure’s funeral ground.
We will miss Claude on our roads where he so fiercely kept bicycling till the end.., and pray that his riding may now be smooth and peaceful, under a vast starry sky.
