Manvasam Farm

Premium Quality Food for Auroville

Mansavam Farm is an initiative of farmer Selvam who loves to be connected to land with a dream of implementing unique ideas into farming. Manavasam is a 7-acre farmland with dairy farming, fruit orchards and field crops. The farm offers milk, pulses & legumes as well as fruits like guava, mangoes, bananas and chikoo.

“For a farmer, the sky is his roof and the field is his classroom. The teacher does not teach him the alphabet but the basics of crop cultivation does.”
- Surendra Kumar Mohanty

Vision

Manvasam farm focuses on organic farming practices with an emphasis on the production of good quality A2 milk from indigenous cow breeds. It aims towards developing a dairy with happy cows that can move freely and thus produce a better quality and healthy milk. It hopes to grow orchards and produce other crops that would be integrated well with the dairy.

What does Manvasam Offer
  • A2 milk from indigenous cows that are fed lots of fodder and grass
  • Fruits
  • Pulses & Legumes

This is one of the youngest farms of Auroville. It started with Indian indigenous cows and around 120 fruit trees offering organic produce to the Auroville community.

History

Selvam - the steward of Manvasam Farm has utilized his creativity and connection to his native roots by starting a small farm of his own after getting trained in older farms of Auroville such as Annapurna farm and Buddha Garden. Manvasam is the result of an enlarging personal capacity, overcoming obstacles and embracing passionately a vision to produce healthy produce for the Auroville community.

Selvam was supported financially and manually by his family, fellow farmers and Auroville during the first year of starting the farm. The second-year became demanding with low yields, less income and rising costs. Reduced support from the community and crop damage due to rain were additional challenges that he faced. The Covid pandemic had also brought further difficulties in marketing and distribution. Selvam also found it difficult to work with the clayey soil of his farm that tends to absorb a lot of water.

Selvam, due to his desire for activity and love for farming, is continuously striving towards retaining sustainable farming practices despite failures and challenges in marketing and distribution of the produce.
