The Auroville Archives was established in 1991 and is the repository of historical documents, photographs, videos, etc., about Auroville, in both analog and digital formats.

Chronicles of an Experimental Township

The Auroville Archives serve as a repository for significant letters, documents, publications, photographs, slides, and audio/visual materials related to the concept, planning, inauguration, and progressive development of Auroville.

Under the guidance of the Late General Krishna Tiwari, an Aurovilian who was an active member of the community from 1976 to 2015, the Auroville Archives was established in 1991, with the aim of chronicling the growth of the township from its inception onwards.

The documents housed in the Auroville Archives include:

Written Records: These include brochures, publications, newsletters, news clippings, papers related to working group activities and official documents, from the early years of Auroville onwards.

Photographs and Slides: Photographic records of Auroville's journey.

Audio and Video Records: These include documentaries, video documentation from different periods of Auroville, audio and video, interviews etc.

Research Documents and Drawings: Studies, research papers, master plans, presentation documents and drawings relating to the design and planning of the Auroville township and associated topics.

The physical collection of the Auroville Archives is kept in a humidity-controlled room within the Archives building, with no external walls or windows, which gives the collection room a level of seperation from the outside elements, and protects the documents from heat, dust and insects.

The Archives has for many years now been in the process of digitizing the physical collection, and we are constantly adding new materials to both the physical as well as digital collections. Much of the collection is now digitized, and the digital collection grows continuously.
