Getting Your Entry Visa

(For applicants from outside India)

Non‑Indian citizens must obtain an OCI or an Entry X‑2 Visa endorsed for Auroville. You will apply through the Indian Embassy or Consulate in your home country with a Letter of Recommendation issued by the Auroville Foundation sent to you by the Admissions and Terminations Registry (ATR). This visa (or an OCI) is mandatory for both volunteering and working in Auroville. It is typically granted for one year and can be renewed three times while you reside in Auroville. No other visa is applicable for a volunteer, newcomer or resident.

Note: Visa categories, durations and processes are governed by the Government of India rules and may change. ATR will guide you on a case-by-case basis.

Financial contributions for Newcomers

  • Return‑ticket deposit (foreigners only): Deposit the value of an economy‑class return ticket to your home country. It is refunded when you leave India or renew your visa abroad.
  • City Services contribution: Volunteers, Newcomers and Residents pay a fixed monthly amount that sustains Auroville’s common services.
  • Maintenance: Auroville may provide a monthly maintenance - a form of basic amount for sustenance - if an Auroville unit or service is ready to engage your services.
  • Health cover: All Newcomers and Residents must be enrolled in the Auroville Health Fund (preferred) or hold private insurance valid in India.

Housing

Auroville currently faces a housing shortage - Newcomers - including families - should be prepared for temporary accommodation and, where possible, to donate / contribute towards the construction of an apartment. Most residences are built through donations/ contributions from Residents and Newcomers. New residential projects are initiated or approved by the Auroville Town Development Council (ATDC).

Children

Children accompanying Newcomers are welcome in Auroville schools and may participate fully in the educational, cultural and sporting activities available to the community’s youth. Children of Newcomer need to contribute towards the school whereas for Aurovilians enrolment is free of charge.
