CIRHU

Centre for International Research in Human Unity

We are witnessing at present an evolutionary leap the likes of which has not taken place for long. We are living through an unprecedented acceleration of human history, where a global media has made our world one big village where local and national consciousness is becoming planetary.

"A spiritual evolution, an evolution of consciousness in Matter in a constant developing self-formation till the form can reveal the indwelling spirit, is then the key note, the central significant motive of the terrestrial existence."
Sri Aurobindo
CIRHU: Bringing About a New Understanding

Several years ago it was unimaginable that we would experience such a reversal of our old ways of thinking. From this turning point there springs a new understanding that behind these changes is a dynamic process, a universal consciousness, that calls and compels people who have reached the limits of this uncontrollable world and its contradictions to question their own failings and to rethink the whole world.

The project for a Center for International Research in Human Unity is part of such a perspective. Its fundamental role must be to help understand the world's problems in their globality, as a play of evolutionary forces at work, and to support or to check their effects. In its first phase, CIRHU will endeavour to initiate actions aimed at modifying our present way of behavior, transforming it, while keeping in mind the overall well-being of the earth and those who inhabit it. In its second phase, CIRHU will prepare and promote meetings of a world PARLIAMENT and accelerate human unity in diversity, so as to build the CITY of a new humankind upon a reconciled earth.

Of course, viewed through the prism of present day reality, the enterprise may seem out of proportion. But the task of re-humanizing, "recivilizing" and spiritualizing society is imperative; it is a battle for the survival of our species. Along these lines, some results have already been achieved in the world, thanks to many individual efforts such as Antartica, the protection of minorities, Amnesty International, "Medecins sans Frontieres", etc. But there is an urgency to consolidate these efforts at a global level, because we must keep ahead in the race against the deterioration of our planet, and that depends upon a collective will and concerted forces.

There is no more place for one-sided hegemony or chauvinism. This nascent universal order must make for itself a structure and an organization commensurable with its goals.

Objectives and Realization

The project of CIRHU wants to be international and to be promoted by the United Nations under the auspices of the Government of India. The workings of this organism must be free from all kinds of pressure and operate solely for the service of humanity. That is an essential condition for its international recognition and for its right to initiate changes in the countries concerned. This independence is necessary and calls for the financial help of an Alternative World Bank whose role is to see about the finances of CIRHU with the assistance of Foundations and private or Government bodies.

Why is CIRHU in India?

1. Because of India's widely recognised democratic traditions, its neutrality, and its capacity for tolerance.

2. Because of the presence on its soil of an international city under development for over fifty years, supported by UNESCO and a Foundation of the Indian Government: AUROVILLE, whose Charter calls for the realisation of human unity.

3. Because of its age-old knowledge of spirituality, still vibrant today, which, offers propitious conditions for CIRHU's realization.

4. Because of the presence in India of a multiplicity of ethnic groups and religions which, while posing unique problems of co-existence, are leading India towards some of the first attempts at unity in diversity

Where will CIRHU be situated?

CIRHU will be situated in Auroville in Tamil Nadu, South India. Auroville's aim is to receive 50,000 volunteers from all countries of the world to build a living laboratory, a day-to-day experiment in individual and collective transformation, beyond all political and religious ideologies.

Near CIRHU's site is the MATRIMANDIR, a place dedicated to universal consciousness. CIRHU will emerge from a group of gardens not far from the International Zone where participating member states will have their pavilions. Among other things, these pavillions are meant to receive researchers who have to come to do specific works of various durations and who will collaborate in the work of CIRHU. CIRHU brings together researchers, Aurovilians and visiting scholars to study social, cultural and environmental challenges, to archive and share knowledge, and to translate lived research into community programmes, workshops and educational activities. The CIRHU building complex is upcoming; at present our working space is located in the HIVE, at Auromode.
