Ira, Irina Zhovtan
Ira passed away early morning on the 6th of January, 2026, following her battle with breast cancer. She passed peacefully at home with family and friends at her side.
Ira was born on the 5th of December 1982, on Sri Aurobindo's Maha Samadhi day. She came to Auroville in 1992 with her parents and brother. She studied in various Auroville schools and later herself worked with children in Pre-creche and at New Creation School. Caring for children, being attentive, supportive and involved in the lives of those around her was her nature.
She worked in various places and was involved in community life — including the Auroville Bakery, Nandini and its Tailoring Section.
Ira was a loving mother to her two children. Above all, we will remember her for her kind, attentive, and strong heart, and for the gentleness and humanity with which she related to people and to our community.
We are grateful to everyone who was close to Ira and who supported her and our family.
Ira will forever remain a part of Auroville and our hearts.
We believe that her soul has continued its journey to the light.
