Fraternity
In late January 1971, the Mother considered a proposal submitted by Sham Sundar to develop a training and production center for handicrafts near Kuilapalayam village, written by Palit (a retired businessman from Bengal) and Sally and Bryan Walton (both from the U.S.).
With the Mother’s blessings, the project began immediately on 2-2-1972. It was agreed that the three of them would jointly finance it. The Mother wanted the ideal of fraternity to mean a more fraternal relationship with the local Tamil village population, "the first Aurovilians," as She said.
Over the course of several decades, Fraternity developed both as a residential community and as a business hub which is named Aurelec, and which continues to function today.
There are about 54 residents currently living in Fraternity houses.
