Auroville Transportation

Auroville aspires towards a viable and pollution-free transport system such as the Solar Tram project (https://auroville.org/page/the-solar-tram). While much remains to be done to reach that goal, efforts are being made to keep the central city area as free as possible of heavy vehicles. Visitors are requested to avoid bringing cars, vans, etc.

Guests living in Auroville can rent bicycles or motorized two-wheelers (and electric two-wheelers from KINISI and ITS) for their local transportation needs. 

Sustainable Mobility for Auroville

Auroville has a not-for-profit transport service for Aurovilians, newcomers, volunteers, visitors and guests called the Integrated Transport Service (ITS).

Public Buses

The Government Bus - 7 days a week

A bus from Puducherry New Bus Stand arrives in Auroville after 1 pm, and departs immediately for Puducherry. Timings still to be confirmed.

Bicycle hire & repair

Cycles can be hired from Visitors Centre Kiosk, 7 days a week, 9.00 am - 5.30 pm. Approximately 130 cycles are available including: single speed lightweight Decathlon mountain bikes. Check for availability 0413-262-3034

A number of guest houses provide cycles on rent to their guests (e.g Centre Guest House, Verite’, and others);

For cycle repairs & punctures go to the Cycle Kiosk at Solar Kitchen, or to the Puncture Service in the Service Area.

Aurovelo, a bicycle and cycle accessories shop, located in Reve community, sells and services imported bicycle brands available in India. It also operates a buy-back scheme for long term guests. A small coffee shop operates within its premises. Ph. 0413-2622380

Moped / Scooter hire, maintenance & repair

Hiring of two wheelers is possible from Nagappan at Fraternity Youth Camp Ph.0413-2622954 or 94434-51016.

Puncture Repairs: Two-wheeler puncture repairs are possible locally at Puncture Service (located in Service Area opposite the Telephone Exchange); Mondays to Saturdays 9 am to 4.30 pm; Ph. 2622741 or 94428-9135.
