Auroville Town Development Council

Auroville's Town Planning Body

L ‘avenir d’Auroville is based on the vision expressed by the Charter, set by the Founders, and its materialized expression in the Master Plan of Auroville. Its vocation is to plan, develop and construct the Auroville Township, not only materially but also fostering the socio-economic fabric of the city, resulting in a balanced, sustainable development, in all aspects – environmental, economic, social, physical.

"There should be somewhere on earth a place which no nation could claim as its own, where all human beings of goodwill, could live freely as citizens of the world; a place of peace, concord and harmony..."

The Mother

History & Today’s Organization

In her 1965 sketch of Auroville, the Mother laid down the basic concept for the city, giving a free hand to French architect, Roger Anger, to oversee the city’s physical development: The concept of a galaxy inspired the further developments of the township. The urban development team operated as “Aurofuture” until 2005 when it was renamed L’avenir d’Auroville. In 2012 it was officialized under the title of Town Development Council.

Its present organization is structured around 2 major areas :

Planning: Plan the next developments of the town, including key aspects such as its economy, education, health and social welfare; enable the creation of affordable homes for Aurovilians, newcomers and students.

Development:  Co-ordinate and implement infrastructure for utilities like Water, Electricity, Telecommunications and Waste Water; finalise the level of roads and plinth level for buildings.
