His Excellency Shri Mukut Mithi, Lt. Governor of Puducherry
has consented to inaugurate the exhibition
on Saturday August 11, 2007 at 16:30 hrs.
Madame Joëlle Rayet, Consul General of France in Pondicherry and Chennai, Mr. Roland Friedrich Herrmann, Consul General of Germany in Chennai and Mrs Meghna Singh of the EU Delegation to India will be present. Shri M. Ramaswamy, IAS, Secretary, Auroville Foundation will preside.
All are welcome. Tea and snacks will be served.
The exhibition provides a glimpse into the extraordinary life and achievements of a Frenchman little known in India, Jean Monnet.
He was called by John F. Kennedy a “statesman of the world”
and was credited by the famous economist Keynes for having shortened World War II by a year. He made the cover of the Time Magazine and an article described him thus in 1961: “There lives today near Paris an ascetic, unobtrusive Frenchman who may ultimately succeed where others, from Charlemagne to Napoleon, ultimately failed. He commands no armies or popular following, but his work is worth uncounted divisions to the West. He has neither title nor portfolio, but he has privileged access to every chancellery of Western Europe.
He has no formal higher education, but the world's most brilliant economists regard him as their peer. He has never joined a political party, but parliamentarians across Europe flock to his summons.
His name is Jean Monnet, and he is the practical apostle of European unity…”
Jean Monnet’s life is in itself an inspiring story.
Man of action and philosopher, philosopher in action, he embodied some great values which can be described as universal
but which happen to be very much at the core of Indian tradition.
Using Monnet’s own words as well as rare photo archives,
the exhibition recounts that story.
But the Uniting People – Jean Monnet exhibition
will not only present the life of Jean Monnet,
it will also evoke the main features of the entity called the European Union,
the construction of which is probably an adventure without precedent;
finally, it will look at other experiences and adventures, this time in Asia,
such SAARC or ASEAN.
The exhibition has been prepared in Auroville.
Aron Nicolet has created a painting for each of the 32 panels.
The catalogue of the exhibition has been published with the support of the
Sri Aurobindo International Institute of Educational Research (SAIIER).

A prayer for peace
Message from His Holiness The Dalai Lama
I am very happy to know that on the last day of the year a mandala of light and prayers for peace will be offered at the Pavilion of Tibetan Culture in Auroville.
It is easy simply to pray for peace without doing much to bring it about, but I feel that such prayers will be both more effective and more fulfilling when combined with the simple practice of offering light.
This is a longstanding Buddhist tradition said to give rise to many benefits that include enhancing the wisdom being able to distinguish what is right from what is wrong and eliminating the darkness of ignorance, which is equated with the misconception of inherent existence.
It is further said that as a result of offering light, even while turning in the cycle of existence we will always find illumination and we will eventually become a light for the world.
Another explanation equates offering light to the stability and clarity of patience. We cannot practise patience without wisdom and compassion, which is why it also contributes to overcoming ignorance.
Patience that is compared to light does not denote weakness, but rather strength of mind, the clear, stable nature of the mind that is not disturbed by other forces. Such patience has great qualities, like the clarity that knows what is to be done, what is necessary and what is not necessary.
Finally, it is easy to see that light has a pervasive and uplifting quality.
Therefore, I pray that as this year gives way to the next, due to the merit generated by your offerings and prayers on this occasion, the light of peace may shine clearly throughout the world.
