How to reach Harvest

WHO WE ARE

Auroville Water Harvest is a non profit organization working in the area of Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu since 1996 to combat sea water intrusion and to promote integrated water management with people's participation. Our aim is to develop efficient and sustainable remediation techniques based on deep understanding of the surface and groundwater systems. We undertake a wide array of activities, research and development programs pertaining to water management, with an emphasis on sustainable integrated development.

Along with our Trust, the Center for Scientific Research ( CSR ), we are involved in the design and dissemination of decentralized wastewater treatment plants ( DEWATS ), of which Harvest is the technical counterpart.

Multidisciplinary project teams tackle a broad array of water issues aiming at conducting field researches, operational projects, and to develop new methodologies in the field of water management including social aspects

Auroville Water Harvest is a Public Service Unit with non-profit motive, under the Auroville Foundation

OUR MISSION AND GOAL

The mission of Harvest is to fight saline water intrusion and to restore and sustain the water resources with users and stakeholders participation.

The Goal of Auroville Water Harvest is to promote sustainable and integrated solutions and to create an enabling body at the watershed level involving multifarious stakeholders in rural, urban, peri urban and industrial areas that will own, manage and maintain the water resources through a comprehensive water resource management plan

HISTORY

Auroville Water Harvest , an integrated water development agency, was launched on 15th August 1996. Harvest is a research and implementation unit with a participatory approach that deals with water resources management in the Auroville bioregion.

Since 1995, salty water intrusion is monitored in the coastal aquifers, which is the consequence of over-pumping of ground water and the decay of the monsoon harvest ing tanks. With time, excessive exploitation of aquifers and neglect of surface water structures resulted in saline intrusion in the coastal aquifers , with cause for concern in the interior region. The impending environmental catastrophe provoked the organization to embark on a strategy to control the ecological damage and devise management initiatives with a holistic perspective.

However, these physical causes are deep rooted in the way water is perceived and handled by individuals and society. The environmental, social, technical and economical challenges are all interconnected. And hence it becomes imperative to address these issues in a holistic way.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Of all the elements which surround us and constitute us, that which holds us more at heart is water!

One needs only little imagination to understand that through water, we gradually cross all the layers of life and human activities. Such a journey puts us unavoidably in contact with the myriad aspects of water, its multiple potentials, uses and related customs, but also with the disastrous impact of overpopulation and a development based on short-term sight and immediate profit. problems like reduction in water resources, lack of sanitation, poor water access, pollution from industries and agriculture chemicals, saline intrusion into fresh water aquifers, global warming…  The list is endless. And in our area, as revealed through the number of researches we have undertaken, the situation is alarming with it's interlinks to social, political and physical aspects.

With enthusiasm, confidence and the spirit of adventure suitable for Auroville, in answer to this alarming situation, the team of Auroville Water Harvest has been working for the last 12 years. We integrate our approach and look further into our actions to include/understand and answer the multiple challenges, on the ground, in partnership with the population and the authorities. working not only in the bio area of Auroville (located in Tamil Nadu and including the Territory of Pondicherry)  we also work in many other areas of Tamil Nadu and India on different water related issues.

To propose true solutions, adapted to the local conditions, to make the rural community life a little easier and which can also be used as model for other places facing similar situations, is our dream and our motivation.

I give a warm welcome all those like minded passionate people, those enthused to be a part of a multi changing society and those who believe they can make a small change in the world, to our team at Harvest.
